Quickstart
Start with one private app, create your account, and explore before adding a media stack.
Omakase Plus is a private preview. Obtain an authorized source checkout from the maintainer before following these steps. There is no public Plus installer, signup service, or public source repository. The related public recommendation product is a different edition.
1. Choose your starting point
| If you want to… | Start with… |
|---|---|
| Create your account and start with anime search and personal planning | Omakase only — follow this page |
| Connect Plex or services you already run | Connect an existing stack |
| Prepare storage and a separate Plex server | Local Storage + Plex |
Plex is optional for app-only use. With zero saved integrations, you can create an account, finish Setup and use anime title search through the public AniList catalog (internet access is still required). Movie and TV catalog search requires a configured Seerr connection. Anime AI recommendations require your own AI connection. Saving a plan does not require playable files.
2. Prepare your private configuration
These commands run from the authorized checkout on a Linux Docker host, with Docker Engine, the Compose plugin and Python 3 already installed. Python 3 is used below to generate the encryption key. Windows users should run them in their prepared Linux host or shell, rather than paste them into PowerShell.
cp .env.local.example .env.local
cp .env.local.secrets.example .env.local.secrets
chmod 0600 .env.local.secretsEdit .env.local: choose OMAKASE_DATA_PATH and set OMAKASE_PUID / OMAKASE_PGID to the host account that owns that directory (the examples default to 1000:1000). Create the app-data directory with those permissions. It stores your private database and account state; do not point it at a media folder or a network filesystem.
Generate a master encryption key locally:
python3 -c 'import secrets; print(secrets.token_hex(32))'Save the output as OMAKASE_PLUS_MASTER_KEY in .env.local.secrets. Never commit or share that file. Back up the key securely with the database: losing either prevents a complete recovery. The standalone deployment does not use the example's import or library paths.
3. Start the app
Use the standalone file on its own:
docker compose --env-file .env.local -f compose.standalone.yaml config --quiet
docker compose --env-file .env.local -f compose.standalone.yaml build --pull omakase-plus
docker compose --env-file .env.local -f compose.standalone.yaml up -d
docker inspect omakase-local-app --format '{{.State.Health.Status}}'Expected result: configuration validation prints no errors; the app eventually reports healthy. If validation fails, correct the reported configuration before starting. If health stays starting or becomes unhealthy, follow startup troubleshooting.
Open http://127.0.0.1:8766/plus on the Docker host. On a remote server, that address belongs to the server: use your administrator's configured private access route. Keep the default loopback binding until trusted access is deliberately configured. Private mode alone is not a firewall.
4. Create your account and finish Setup
Choose Create account if the server permits private registration or invitations. Google sign-in appears only when the administrator has configured it.
- Choose: select Omakase only, an existing stack, or optional Plex. Your separate media preference can be cloud, local/NAS, or explore first.
- Connect: save only the connections you use in Settings, then explicitly choose Test connection.
- Review: inspect saved results and their timestamps. Review does not automatically contact providers.
- Enjoy: finish and open Home. You can return to Setup later; missing optional services do not trap you here.
Expected result: you have a private account and can finish Setup without integrations. Start with anime title search and personal planning. Movie and TV catalog search requires Seerr; AI recommendations require your own AI connection. Existing personal records remain separate from media availability. Setup saves guidance; it does not install Docker, mount a NAS, claim Plex, buy services or start acquisitions.
Next, make it yours
- Setup choices explains which connections each workflow uses.
- Movies & TV separates catalog search, requests, library inventory and watch history.
- Agent tools adds an optional local JSON CLI and MCP connection.
- Backup & recovery protects your account before upgrades.
